It was a pleasure to contribute to the restoration of another historic building in Chatteris. This charming listed cottage which is being meticulously restored by its current owners, who are dedicated to preserving its original features and materials to a high standard.
Cambridge Building Repairs (CBR) was asked to assess the current condition of the chimney stacks and provide cost-effective repair recommendations. The goal was to preserve the structural integrity of the masonry stacks while also preparing the façade and thatched roof for further refurbishment.

During the inspection, several age-related issues were identified, including flaking paint, dampness, loose mortar joints, degraded flaunching, vegetation growth, and vertical misalignment. For a lasting solution, CBR recommended reconstructing the stacks with materials that match the original as closely as possible.
However, given the logistical constraints, associated costs, and the scheduled re-thatching and decorative work, a more practical, cost-effective solution was agreed upon and completed by CBR that same week. This work involved carefully removing all loose and deteriorated materials and repointing the brickwork with traditional materials. All tasks were carried out by hand to avoid disturbing the integrity of the protected chimney.

Over time, this expansion causes the surface to flake or chip, leading to more serious structural degradation if not addressed. To mitigate this seasonal impact, it is advisable to repair any visible cracks and apply sealants where necessary, ensuring the structure’s longevity and resilience.
